A legend of the indigenous Pomo of Northern California says that a Bear wanders along the Milky Way until he meets up with the Sun. Neither wants to give way to the other, so a fight ensues. The Bear takes a bite out of the Sun, which we see as an eclipse. The Bear continues on his journey and eventually his path crosses with the Sun's sister - the Moon. The Bear argues with her as well, resulting in a Lunar eclipse. And that is how the cycle repeats each time.
